Wise moves forward with streetscape project

WISE — Wise Town Council has unanimously agreed to proceed with final
design of a streetscape improvement project along Main Street from Railroad
Avenue to Spring Avenue.
The town will allocate additional funds to complete the project.
Work will include constructing new sidewalks on both sides of Main Street,
installing ornamental street lights, decorative crosswalks, planters and possibly
trees.
Greg Widener of Thompson & Litton, the engineer and architect on the project,
said the width of Main Street between Railroad and Spring avenues will be
reduced to allow sidewalk space to increase from 10 to 15 feet. Eleven-foot drive
lanes will still be maintained with parallel parking on both sides, he said. As a
result of the sidewalk widening, four parking spaces along Main Street will be
removed.
Wise Planning and Zoning Director Laura Mullins said the project’s design must
be submitted to VDOT for review and approval before construction can
commence. She told council members she hopes construction begins before next
spring.
