THOMPSON & LITTON, a multi-disciplined firm serving both public and private sector clients, has an opening for a Civil Engineer Intern in its Radford, Virginia office. This position is intended for a motivated student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering who is interested in land development and infrastructure design.
The Civil Engineer Intern will work directly with licensed engineers and project managers to support the planning and design of site development, utility, and stormwater projects.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assists engineers with the preparation of engineering reports, proposals, and project documentation.
- Conducts research of municipal zoning, development ordinances, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
- Assists with site visits, field investigations, and data collection efforts.
- Supports the development of conceptual site layouts based on project criteria and due diligence findings.
- Assists with grading design and earthwork analyses to support proper drainage and balanced site development.
- Supports Erosion and Sediment Control plan preparation and narrative development.
- Assists with stormwater management system design, including conveyance, detention, and water quality practices.
- Performs supporting calculations under the supervision of a licensed engineer.
- Assists with utility design including water distribution and sanitary sewer systems.
- Helps prepare construction drawings, technical specifications, and cost estimates.
Minimum Requirements:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework emphasis in land development, water resources, or transportation.
- Experience with AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
Compensation:
Hourly pay range: $15.76 – $22.53, based on academic level, relevant experience, and technical skillset.
