Wise, VA – Thompson & Litton, Inc. (T&L) is pleased to announce the election of Jack Murphy, AIA, as Chairman of the Board of Directors, marking an important milestone in the company’s ongoing commitment to succession planning, leadership development, and long-term organizational sustainability.

Murphy succeeds Ron Helton, PE, who has stepped down as Chairman in anticipation of his transition to part-time retirement after an extraordinary 47-year career with Thompson & Litton. Throughout his tenure, Helton provided steady guidance and strategic direction that strengthened the company’s culture, expanded the services offered, supported growth across the organization, and positioned T&L for continued success.

Murphy joined Thompson & Litton in 1996 after relocating from Pennsylvania to establish the firm’s Radford VA office. Over the past three decades, he has played a key role in the growth of both the office and the company’s client base. As a project manager, he led many of the firm’s largest and most complex multi-discipline projects, earning a reputation for delivering successful outcomes for clients across a wide range of markets.

Today, as Senior Vice President of Project Management, Murphy provides oversight and support for project managers throughout T&L’s offices. His experience spans all phases of project delivery, including planning, funding, design, and construction contract administration. His broad understanding of the firm’s operations, culture, and strategic objectives uniquely positions him to lead the Board as T&L continues to evolve and grow. As Chairman, he will work closely with fellow Board members to advance the firm’s strategic vision, support its employee-owners, and ensure continued success for clients and communities throughout the region.

The Board also announced the stepping down of Rick Chitwood, whose 42 years of service have left a lasting impact on the firm and its people. Thompson & Litton extends its sincere appreciation to Chitwood for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the company throughout his distinguished career. Chitwood will continue his full time role with Thompson & Litton as a Client Service Manager.

“These transitions reflect a thoughtful and deliberate succession planning process designed to ensure the continued strength and stability of our organization,” said Greg Hurst, PE, President of Thompson & Litton. “We are grateful for the service of Ron and Rick. Collectively, they have dedicated nearly 90 years to Thompson & Litton, helping to shape the company into the organization it is today. We are equally excited to welcome Jack as Chairman of the Board and look forward to his leadership as we continue building on our strong foundation and pursuing new opportunities for growth.”
