T&L Director of Architecture Carl Gutschow Retires

T&L Director of Architecture Carl Gutschow Retires

Our Director of Architecture, Carl Gutschow, has worked for us for almost 20 years and he is officially retiring on November 24. Carl has worked in multiple locations due to his positions within the company so he quickly became a familiar face to everyone. His latest one was our Johnson City office where he helped the crew there become a part of the T&L team. Carl knew how to get things done and wasn’t scared to ruffle some feathers which helped us in the long run. While we are incredibly happy to celebrate this milestone with him, Carl, we truly are going to miss you.

Thompson & Litton Celebrating 65 Years Of Service and Still Going Strong!

Thompson & Litton Celebrating 65 Years Of Service and Still Going Strong!

New River Valley / Radford, VA Location Reaches 25th Milestone

Thompson & Litton, Inc. (T&L), a full-service engineering, architectural and land surveying firm that provides comprehensive services in the areas of Architecture, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing and Structural Engineering, Construction Contract Administration, Project Management, and Land Surveying for both public and private sector clientele, is celebrating two significant milestones during 2021.

It was 65 years ago on June 21, 1956 when William A. Thompson, Jr. and John W. Litton established the company with an original staff of seven in Wise, VA, which still serves as the company headquarters. That number has now flourished to over 140 employees through seven additional offices located in Radford, Tazewell, and Chilhowie, VA; Bristol, Mosheim, and Johnson City, TN; and Princeton, WV. Radford is celebrating a second success with their 25th anniversary on Sept. 30.

“Firms don’t design projects; people do.” This is the belief that was instilled 65 years ago by the founders of T&L and it is still apparent by the professionalism you will find with every employee. “As we celebrate this important milestone, I can’t help but to reflect on our tagline — integrity, insight, and innovation,” stated Ron Helton, PE. Helton has seen T&L evolve into the company it is today after he began his career at the firm in 1979. He served as T&L President for over 21 years, and is currently a Senior Vice-President and Chairman of T&L’s Board of Directors. Helton expressed that Bill Thompson and John Litton instilled integrity in all who they touched, and the adherence to that same integrity continues today at T&L, especially under the leadership of company president Greg Hurst, PE. Helton further stated, “We enjoy and capitalize on six and a half decades of insight, as we constantly seek out innovation and new and better ways to serve our clients. It is gratifying to know that T&L helped to make a difference for these clients and communities that we have served, and we look forward to many more years of positive impact.” Steve Brooks, PE, Senior Vice President of Operations, echoed those remarks and stated that “The thing that I find most satisfying working for T&L over the years is the positive impact our projects have had on the communities we serve. I see that as a privilege!”

T&L Senior Vice President and Radford Office Branch Manager Jack Murphy, AIA spoke on their milestone. “It’s hard to believe how quickly 25 years have passed! I’m extremely proud of this milestone occasion celebrating the establishment of the Radford office,” Murphy stated. “During this journey, we have grown to become one of T&L’s largest offices, but more importantly, we have become vested members within the community in which we serve. We are extraordinarily fortunate to be able to live, work and raise our families in this part of Virginia, where we can contribute to the development and growth of the region while working alongside so many other great community members who share the same vision.”

Thompson & Litton has continued to persevere even after a significant decline in business during the 1980’s due to the coal industry recession. The ability of the company to adapt, diversify and grow has strengthened its reputation and presence in the community. This year, T&L reflects on these two significant milestones and continues to look forward every day. “This is a remarkable achievement…a blessing, and I am humbled by the opportunity to serve the employee-owners of this great company,” said Hurst. “I look forward to the opportunities that will present themselves as we continue to do what we do best…provide engineering, architectural, land surveying, and construction services to the communities where we live and work throughout our service area.”

Thompson & Litton would especially like to thank its loyal clients throughout the years. They know that every T&L project is handled with integrity, insight and innovation.
